No perfect games this week, but every game continues to exciting, with many going down to the final pitch. It has only been three weeks so far and I do expect things will correct themselves with time, but for the moment the standings are pretty much topsy-turvy. In the American League, both Washington in first and the A's below .500 are a surprise, but the real surprise at this point is that the White Sox have clawed their way into second place. They do have the worst ERA in the AL, so I don't expect this hot streak to be maintained. Detroit is hanging in there, but both the Yankees and the A's are starting to play better - it just may be that they are starting to play teams from the western half of the league. In the National League, Brooklyn and St. Louis continue to dominate, but the Cubs have finally pulled themselves over the .500 mark. Monday, April 28, 1930 Philadelphia (AL) 5 Boston (AL) (H) 4 (11) A two-run homerun by second baseman Max Bishop gave the A's an early 3-0 lead, but two run-scoring doubles by Bill Regan helped the Red Sox chip away at that lead and eventually send the game to extra innings. The A's thought they had it won in the eleventh, but again the Red Sox managed to tie it up. The A's scored again in the top of the thirteenth and Lefty Grove shut down the Red Sox to get the win in relief. Detroit (H) 8 Chicago (AL) 3 Bob Fothergill led off the game with a homerun to give the Tigers an early lead, but the White Sox fought back to tie the game at 3 coming out of the fourth. Week 2 is in the books and the replay continues to be quite exciting. You never know when it is going to happen, but while some games are low-scoring some just seem to otherwise explode with offense. There are late-inning heroics, complete meltdowns, and of all things, a perfect game by Vic Sorrell. The Tigers and the Nationals are the surprises in the AL. Neither New York or Philadelphia can keep a streak going, but both teams figure to be in it until the end. Babe Ruth has five homeruns and eighteen RBI's through eight games, and Heinie Manush is still hitting over .500 (.528) for the Browns. The Cardinals offense has been the big story in the NL so far with 97 runs scored in 12 games. There are six Cardinals in the top seven for runs scored in the league. Monday, April 21, 1930   Chicago (AL) (H) 4 St. Louis (AL) 3  A two-run double in the seventh by Browns starter  General Crowder  appeared to give the visitors enough for the victory, but the opposing starter,  Ted Lyons , hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game up.
