Week 23 Recap

Week 23 is completed and it is just about time to start wrapping things up here. There are a couple of travel days coming up, there are a few odds and ends games left to play, and then everyone has their final series to end the season. Cincinnati still has seven games to pay, but most teams have 3-5, so the standings are probably pretty close to final. Several teams are trying out some youngsters and several veterans are seeing their major league careers winding down. Philadelphia did clinch the AL pennant, but in the NL Brooklyn has been eliminated and Chicago is holding on by a slim thread. St. Louis swept three games in Brooklyn to start the week and they have been on a hot streak at the perfect time of the season. Brooklyn's offense has slowed without Johnny Frederick at the top, and Chicago is missing Charley Root anchoring their rotation, and neither team has played well since they lost these critical players. New York may dream of what could have been, but they are

Week 23 (09/15/1930 - 09/21/1930)

Monday, September 15, 1930 Joe Judge Washington 5 Chicago (AL) (H) 3 (13) The White Sox built an early lead, but the Nationals kept hanging around until they finally tied it at 3-3 in the seventh. There the score stayed until Joe Judge doubled home Heinie Manush in the thirteenth to put the Nationals ahead to stay. Detroit (H) 5 New York (AL) 4 Both teams scored once in the first, and then the Tigers scored twice in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. The Yankees came right back with two in the seventh on a Lyn Lary double, only to have Detroit come back with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Yankees scored one in the ninth, but Vic Sorrell (16-11) got out of a bases-loaded situation in the ninth to pick up the win. Lary had all four of the Yankees RBI's in this game. St. Louis (AL) (H) 18 Boston (AL) 1 (GM 1) Lefty Stewart (25-6) didn't allow a run until the ninth inning but drove in two runs himself on a triple. Right fielder Ted

Week 22 Recap

Week 22 is complete and teams are finishing up their yearly series against their remaining opponents. The NL Midwest teams are out east for one more week and the AL East teams are making their final swing through the great Midwest. The Cincinnati Reds have only played 139 games to date,  with the remainder of the league games played in the low 140's so the final two weeks will be action-filled as there are several final standings slots still in question. The NL is where the eyes of baseball are gazing. St. Louis spent the week alone in first place, albeit slightly, allowing Chicago and Brooklyn to batter each other as they swapped second and third place spots a few times. Both teams have key injuries, but both teams have a series against St. Louis yet to come as well. New York is comfortably settled into fourth place - they aren't going anywhere. Fifth place Cincinnati still maintains a three-game lead over sixth place Pittsburgh as both teams had a bad week. These two t

Week 22 (09/08/1930 - 09/14/1930)

Monday, September 8, 1930 Brooklyn 10 Philadelphia (NL) (H) 8 (GM 1) The Phillies second inning started with a Chuck Klein solo homerun, then a Don Hurst homerun, a Tony Rensa strikeout, and then a Pinky Whitney homerun. Klein followed that up with a two-run homerun in the third. Undeterred the Robins regained the lead, at least until Klein hit another two-run homerun in the seventh to tie the score back up at 7-7. The Robins kept pounding the Phillies pitching and eventually won the game. The Phillies could have used Lefty O'Doul in this one (he has missed the last five games). Brooklyn 4 Philadelphia (NL) (H) 3 (GM 2) The Phillies broke a scoreless tie with two in the sixth, but the Robins answered right back with three in the seventh. Both teams scored once in the eighth, put Sloppy Thurston came in and kept the Phillies from tying the game back up and the Robins had the doubleheader sweep an inched a little closer to the top.    Tuesday, Septembe
