Week 23 (09/15/1930 - 09/21/1930)

Monday, September 15, 1930

Joe Judge
Washington 5 Chicago (AL) (H) 3 (13)

The White Sox built an early lead, but the Nationals kept hanging around until they finally tied it at 3-3 in the seventh. There the score stayed until Joe Judge doubled home Heinie Manush in the thirteenth to put the Nationals ahead to stay.

Detroit (H) 5 New York (AL) 4

Both teams scored once in the first, and then the Tigers scored twice in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. The Yankees came right back with two in the seventh on a Lyn Lary double, only to have Detroit come back with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Yankees scored one in the ninth, but Vic Sorrell (16-11) got out of a bases-loaded situation in the ninth to pick up the win. Lary had all four of the Yankees RBI's in this game.

St. Louis (AL) (H) 18 Boston (AL) 1 (GM 1)

Lefty Stewart (25-6) didn't allow a run until the ninth inning but drove in two runs himself on a triple. Right fielder Ted Gullic went 3-for-6 and drove in five runs and catcher Rick Ferrell had a 4-for-5 day and scored three runs.

St. Louis (AL) (H) 2 Boston (AL) 1 (GM 2)

The Red Sox scored first with one run in the second, but that was all Dick Coffman (11-21) would allow today. The Browns scored unearned runs in both the fifth and seventh and held on for the doubleheader sweep.

Cincinnati 9 Brooklyn (H) 1

Cincinnati split their four-game series with Brooklyn when Red Lucas (14-12) went all the way and allowed the home team only one run. Joe Stripp drove in three runs on a double and a triple and Harry Heilmann added three RBI's as well.

New York (NL) (H) 5 Pittsburgh 4 (10)

The Giants led 3-0 early, but the Pirates kept pushing across single runs until they regained the lead in the top of the ninth with a score of 4-3. The Giants formerly dormant offense woke up long enough to tie the score in the ninth and send the game to extra innings, and then in the bottom of the tenth Travis Jackson singled home Bill Terry with the game winner.

Chicago (NL) 12 Philadelphia (NL) (H) 8 (GM 1)

Sheriff Blake (13-9) hasn't seen much action recently, but with Charlie Root out of action, the Cubs are hoping Blake can step up in the clutch. Of course any day Hack Wilson goes 4-for-5 with two homeruns (#43, #44) and six RBI's (165) is going to be a good day for a Chicago pitcher. Third baseman Les Bell chipped in with a 5-for-5 day and drove in five runs with a double and a homerun.

Chicago (NL) 10 Philadelphia (NL) (H) 3 (GM 2)

Guy Bush (8-12) seems to pitch well when he gets a lot of run support, so today after allowing two runs in the first he settled down and waited for the cavalry to arrive. The Cubs offense scored in every inning from the fourth through the ninth and the Cubs swept the doubleheader. Les Bell went 3-for-5 with three RBI's and a homerun, a nice day for the third baseman.

Tuesday, September 16, 1930

Pennant Chase Note: The Cardinals had an off day yesterday, the Cubs swept a doubleheader, and the Robins lost their game, so St. Louis starts the day with a 1.5 game lead over Chicago and a 2.0 game lead over Brooklyn. St. Louis now starts a three-game series in Brooklyn, and Chicago moves to New York for three as well, so anything can happen, and probably will.

Philadelphia (AL) 19 Chicago (AL) (H) 2 (GM 1) Cycle

Lefty Grove (29-2) went all the way and the A's smoked the White Sox pretty good. The A's had 24 hits, eleven of them for extra bases, and seven of the nine players in the A's lineup had an extra-base hit (Grove had a double). Max Bishop went 4-for-6 with four runs and four RBI's with a double and two homeruns (#24). The highlight though was Al Simmons going 4-for-6 and hitting for the cycle.

Note: White Sox first baseman Johnny Watwood and catcher Butch Henline converged on a pop fly near the first base dugout and got their legs tangled and both had to come out of the game. This game was Henline's 1930 debut.

Note: This was Grove's last start. The A's have all but clinched the pennant and no doubt he was being rested, although he will make a couple of relief appearances yet. Of course, in 1930 he wasn't sitting on 29 wins. I assume if that was the case, then Connie Mack would have found a way to get him one more start. He could get one as part of a relief appearance too I suppose.

 Philadelphia (AL) 6 Chicago (AL) (H) 4 (GM 2)

Smead Jolley popped a three-run homerun and Bill Cissell added a solo shot, but those four runs in the ninth only got the White Sox to within one. Bill Shores (13-7) got the win, and Mickey Cochrane, who went 3-for-5 with two doubles (#53), passed the 200 hit mark for the season.

Boston (AL) 3 Detroit 1

The Red Sox led 3-1 after the top of the second, and there the score stayed until the end. Milt Gaston (17-12) got the win and loser Waite Hoyt (9-17) could have used some run support.

St. Louis (AL) (H) 9 New York (AL) 8 (10)

For the third appearance in a row Hank Johnson (10-7) entered the game in a save situation, gave up the tying run(s), only to see the Yankees offense bail him out when they immediately scored in the next inning. Unfortunately for New York, Johnson blew the lead again, and the Browns walked off with a come-from-behind victory.

St. Louis (NL) 7 Brooklyn (H) 4

Chick Hafey doubled home two runs (125) in the top of the first, but Babe Herman answered back with a two-run homerun (#36, 123) in the bottom of the first. The Cardinals scored once in the second to regain the lead, but the Robins scored twice in the sixth and Dazzy Vance (18-8) appeared to be cruising. Then in the eighth the Cardinals suddenly exploded for four runs, knocking Vance out of the box, and putting the Cardinals ahead to stay.

Chicago (NL) 4 New York (NL) (H) 1

Hack Wilson drove in two runs (169) with two doubles (48) and Gabby Hartnett drove in the other two runs (95) to get the Cubs a 4-1 lead after the fifth, and that was all the scoring in this one. Oldtimer Jesse Petty (2-3) took the mound for the Cubs and made the most of his opportunity.

Philadelphia (NL) (H) 1 Pittsburgh 0

Larry French (11-20) only gave up two hits all day, but one was a solo homerun to Chuck Klein (#36, 149) in the fourth and Claude Willoughby (5-15) went all the way for the shutout win over the Pirates.

Wednesday, September 17, 1930

Philadelphia (AL) 8 Chicago (AL) (H) 5

The A's continue their march to the AL pennant as Eddie Rommel (11-3) made his first appearance in over two weeks and picked up the win. Jimmie Foxx hit a two-run homerun (#33, 133) in the third as part of a four-run inning and got the A's off to a 5-0 lead, and it was too much for the White Sox to overcome.

Bump Hadley
Washington 3 Cleveland (H) 2 (GM 1)

The Indians scored a single run in both the eighth and the ninth to make it close, but the Nationals held on to take game one of the doubleheader. Bump Hadley (18-7) got the win plus he scored a run and drove one in to help his own cause.

Washington 6 Cleveland (H) 4 (GM 2)

Willis Hudlin (3-27) gave up three runs in the first but settled down after that and the Indians slowly worked their way back into the lead, leading 4-3 after six. Hudlin put the first two Nationals batters on in the seventh, got pulled, but the Indians bullpen allowed them to score and Hudlin got pinned with the loss when the Indians couldn’t come back.

Detroit (H) 5 Boston (AL) 2

The Tigers scored four in the first and led 5-0 after the second, and held on to pick up the victory. Dale Alexander drove in two with a single and Tom Hughes drove in two with a double in the fateful first.

New York (AL) 8 St. Louis (AL) (H) 2

The Yankees took an early 2-0 lead, but Brown's first baseman Jack "Slug" Burns, making his ML debut, tied the game in the sixth with a long double. Lou Gehrig responded with a two-run double (#55, 170) of his own and the Yankees offense kicked it up a gear from there to get the win.

Cincinnati 5 Boston (NL (H) 4 (GM 1)

The Reds scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth, but the Braves came right back with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The Reds scored four times in the seventh to take the lead behind a two-run double by Joe Stripp, but couldn't claim the win until left fielder Marty Callaghan threw out Randy Moore at home with the potential tying run with two outs in the ninth. George Sisler came off the bench in the eighth for Boston and hit a pinch-hit homerun to make it close.

Boston (NL) (H) 4 Cincinnati 3 (GM 2)

Wally Berger hit a two-run homerun (#34, 112) in the first to get the Braves a quick lead, but the Reds stayed in it and tied the score at 3-3 after the sixth. Red Rollings drove in George Sisler with the lead run in the bottom of the seventh and Bob Smith made the one-run lead stand up for Boston.

St. Louis (NL) 3 Brooklyn (H) 1

Both teams scored in the second, and there the score stayed until the seventh when the Cardinals scored twice. Chick Hafey scored twice and George Watkins drove in two runs to lead the offense, and Syl Johnson (13-10) and two relievers kept the Robins bats quiet.

New York (NL) (H) 12 Chicago (NL) 6

The score was tied at 1-1 at the end of four, but then the Giants bats woke up and they battered a series of Cubs pitchers for the victory.  Freddy Leach went 2-for-5 with three RBI's, Bill Terry went 3-for-5 with a double and a homerun, and Mel Ott chipped in with two doubles and three RBI's on the day.

Pittsburgh 20 Philadelphia (NL) (H) 11

The Pirates scored in every inning but the fourth and scored against each of the four Phillies pitchers they faced in a 25 hit explosion. Lloyd Waner went 4-for-7 and Paul Waner went 4-for-6 and Erv Brame (12-13) went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI's.

Thursday, September 18, 1930

Philadelphia (AL) 8 Chicago (AL) (H) 3

The A's completed their four-game sweep in Chicago with an easy victory for George Earnshaw (19-11) as the A's scored three times in the first and then just powered on from there. Jimmie Foxx went 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI's to spark the offense.

Note: Right fielder Bing Miller bounced off the outfield wall chasing a fly ball and had to be removed from the game. Jimmy Moore replaced Miller and later got to bat against Jim Moore.

Cleveland (H) 3 Washington 2

The Indians scored three times in the fifth and Wes Ferrell (23-11) made them good as Cleveland salvaged one win out of the three-game series. Dick Porter drove in two of the Indians runs with a well-timed double.

Detroit (H) 4 Boston (AL) 2

The Tigers scored three times in the bottom of the seventh and held on to win the game for Tommy Bridges (1-3). Shortstop Mark Koenig worked an inning and a third of relief but wasn't especially sharp, and Vic Sorrell came in to get the two-out save.

New York (AL) 7 St. Louis (AL) (H) 5

Babe Ruth hit a two run homerun in the top of the first, but then Fred Schulte hit a three run homerun for the Browns the second and St. Louis moved off to a quick 5-2 lead. Sam Byrd hit a two run homerun in the fourth to make it close, and then the Yankees scored two more times in the fifth to regain the lead for good. Red Ruffing (14-13) got the win after a series of relievers held the Browns scoreless for the remainder of the game. Ruth had a double (#23), a triple (#14), and a homerun (#48, 166), but no single, so he did not get a cycle.

St. Louis (NL) 5 Brooklyn (H) 4

Babe Herman hit a two-run homerun (#37, 125) in the first, and while they didn't lose the lead, they could never quite put the Cardinals away. The Robins scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-2 lead, but with two outs and two on in the top of the ninth George Puccinelli hit a pinch-hit three-run homerun to give the Cardinals their first lead. The Robins went quietly in the bottom of the ninth and St. Louis completed their three-game sweep in Brooklyn.

New York (NL) (H) 10 Chicago (NL) 3

The Giants jumped all over Cubs starter Guy Bush (8-13) and by the end of the third inning led 10-1. Freddie Fitzsimmons (20-7) cruised to his twentieth win and Freddie Lindstrom led the offense with a 2-for-5 day that included a double and a homerun and five RBI's. New York took 2-of-3 from the visiting Cubs, dimming Chicago's pennant hopes considerably.

Philadelphia (NL) (H) 6 Pittsburgh 5 (10)

The Phillies led 4-3 at the end of the third, but the Pirates slowly regained the lead, ahead 5-4 after seven. The Phillies tied the game in the ninth due to some sloppy Pirates defense and then won it in the tenth when Pinky Whitney singled home Don Hurst with the game winner.

Friday, September 19, 1930

Pennant Watch Note: St. Louis finds themselves with a 3.5 game lead over Chicago and a 5.0 game lead over Brooklyn, with all three teams having less than ten games left to play. Philadelphia has a magic number of one in the AL, and even though they have a day off on Friday can still clinch if Washington should lose in Detroit.

Chicago (AL) (H) 12 New York (AL) 3

Babe Ruth hit a solo homerun (#49, 167) in the top of the first, but the White Sox soon led 4-2 after the second and then put the game away with a six-run eighth. Ted Lyons (20-14) got his twentieth for the home team.

Boston (AL) 2 Cleveland (H) 1

The Indians scored a run in the second and it like that might be all that Mel Harder (8-10) would need today as he took a 1-0 lead into the ninth, but with two outs and one a runner on second first baseman Phil Todt launched a two-run homerun and the Red Sox had their first lead of the day. Danny MacFayden (11-18) went all the way and picked up the victory.

Washington 8 Detroit (H) 5

The Tigers led 4-1 after the third inning, but the Nationals stormed back with an eight-run eighth to stave off elimination for one more day at least. General Crowder (14-16) got the win and Firpo Marberry got a one-inning save.

Chicago (NL) 7 Boston (NL) (H) 1

Hack Wilson hit a two-run homerun (#46, 174) in the third to give the Cubs an early lead and Gabby Hartnett added a two-run homerun (#28, 99) in the seventh to give the Cubs a little insurance. Bud Teachout (14-6) got the win for the Cubs as they look to stay in the pennant hunt.

Cincinnati 6 New York (NL) (H) 5

The Reds tied the score at 4-4 when second baseman Pat Crawford hit his first homerun of the season in the eighth, and then the Reds scored twice in the ninth to take the lead. The Giants scored once in the ninth to make it close, but Mel Ott was thrown out at home trying to tie the score and the Reds held on for the victory.

St. Louis (NL) 11 Philadelphia (NL) (H) 7

The Phillies led early but the Cardinals climbed back into it finally taking a 5-3 lead after the top of the eighth. The Phillies crushed the Cardinals fans hopes with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, only to see the Cardinals rally for six in the top of the ninth and get the win. Burleigh Grimes (19-7) got the win in relief after not having been able to get the third out in the bottom of the eighth and having allowed the Phillies to temporarily regain the lead.

Note: Jesse Haines got the start for the Cardinals but couldn't finish the first inning due to arm stiffness.

Saturday, September 20, 1930

New York (AL) 11 Chicago (AL) (H) 5

Babe Ruth had another first inning homerun (#50, 169), this one a two-run shot, but it wasn't until Tony Lazzeri hit a three-run homerun (#9, 119) in the sixth that the Yankees really blew the game open. Frank Barnes (1-0) got his first start of the season for the Yankees, went five innings and got the win, and went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI's on the day.

Cleveland (H) 3 Boston (AL) 2

The Indians knew if they lost today they would be tied again with Boston again in sixth place, and it looked bleak when the Red Sox built a quick 2-1 lead and Milt Gaston (17-13) looked unbeatable on the mound today. Ed Morgan came through with a homerun in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score, and then in the bottom of the ninth Johnny Hodapp singled home Dick Porter with the game winner. Wes Ferrell (24-11) picked up the win in relief.

Washington 14 Detroit (H) 4

The Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the first, but that lead disappeared when Dave Harris hit a three run homerun in the third and the Nationals poured it on from there. Buddy Myer and Heinie Manush both had three doubles and Washington had ten doubles on the day.

St. Louis (AL) (H) 5 Philadelphia (AL) 4

With two lineups filled with second stringers and first-timers the Browns moved off to a 4-0 lead after the third and Lefty Stewart appeared to be cruising. The A's bats awoke in the fifth when they scored three times, a Joe Boley two-run homerun being the big hit. There it stayed until the ninth when Al Simmons tied the score with a solo homerun (#29, 155), but the Browns came back in the bottom of the ninth when Alex Metzler singled home Red Kress with the game winner.

Boston (NL) (H) 5 Chicago (NL) 4

Kiki Cuyler hit two solo homeruns (#18, 101) and the Cubs lead 4-2 after the sixth, but Chicago could never quite put away the Braves in this one they paid for it. Wally Berger drove in two runs with a triple in the bottom of the eighth and was then squeezed home by Earl Clark, and Boston had a lead they would not relinquish.

Pittsburgh 5 Brooklyn (H) 4

The Pirates built a 3-1 lead after the top of the eighth, but in the bottom of the eighth Neal Finn singled home two runs to tie the score at 3-3. The Pirates came right back and scored on a Lloyd Waner single in the top of the ninth, and then held off the Robins in the bottom half to claim the win.

New York (NL) (H) 6 Cincinnati 2 (GM 1)

The two teams play back-to-back doubleheaders over the next two days and the Giants took round one when Freddy Leach hit a two run homerun to give New York a 4-0 lead after the second. Clarence Mitchell (9-6) picked up the win to get things started.

New York (NL) (H) 3 Cincinnati 2 (12) (GM 2)

The score was tied 2-2 after the top of the fourth, but that was it until the bottom of the twelfth. Hughie Critz singled home Wally Roettger with the game-winner and the Giants had a doubleheader sweep.

St. Louis (NL) 15 Philadelphia (NL) (H) 4 (GM 1)

The Cardinals and the Phillies have a doubleheader because the Phillies can't host tomorrow, although the two teams will play again on Monday and Tuesday. The Cardinals continued their hot streak as they scored three in the first and then five more in the second, and they continued to pound a series of Phillies pitchers from there. Flint Rhem (10-6) went all the way for the Cardinals.

Philadelphia (NL) (H) 5 St. Louis (NL) 0 (GM 2)

Ray Benge (8-13) got the upper hand on the Cardinals today and never let up, going all the way for a complete game shutout. Chuck Klein hit his second two-run homerun (#38, 156) of the day and Lefty O'Doul drove in a run with a pinch-hit single.

Sunday, September 21, 1930

New York (AL) 6 Chicago (AL) (H) 1

The White Sox didn’t score until the sixth when Bob Fothergill hit a pinch-hit homerun, but that was all the Yankees pitching staff would give up today. Babe Ruth homered (#51, 171) for the fourth day in a row, and Lou Gehrig picked up two RBI's and a double (#57, 174).

Willis Hudlin
Boston (AL) 6 Cleveland (H) 3 (11)

The Indians scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings, but then the Red Sox scored three times in the eleventh to grab the victory. Phil Todt had a two-run double in the final frame that put the Red Sox ahead to stay.

Detroit (H) 1 Washington 0 (10)

Center fielder Frank Doljack put another nail in the Nationals coffin when he hit a homerun in the bottom of the tenth to give the Tigers a 1-0 win. Earl Whitehill (12-14) only allowed four hits and got the complete game victory.

St. Louis (AL) (H) 5 Philadelphia (AL) 4 (GM 1)

Without knowing what was transpiring in Detroit, the A's were looking to clinch the AL pennant. Al Simmons hit two homeruns (#31, 157) and then the Browns came back Jimmie Foxx added a homerun (#34, 136) of his own to give the A's a 4-3 lead after the top of the eighth. George Earnshaw (19-12) was looking for his twentieth win but gave up a two-run homerun to Fred Schulte in the eighth and the Browns held on to take game one of the doubleheader.

Philadelphia (AL) 17 St. Louis (AL) (H) 5 (GM 2)

The A's scored five times in the first and six times in the second and went on to clinch the 1930 AL pennant. Jimmie Foxx had a three-run homerun (#35, 139) in the first, Mule Haas had one in the second, and then Al Simmons added a two-run homerun (#32, 160) in the fourth as the A's pounded a series of Browns pitchers to take game two of the doubleheader.

Chicago (NL) 10 Boston (NL) (H) 5

Knowing that St. Louis had an off-day today and that the Cardinals magic number was down to three, the Cubs knew they still had a chance. Hack Wilson hit a two-run homerun (#47, 177) in the first and then Woody English added a three-run homerun in the second and Pat Malone (23-9) went all the way to keep the Cubs hopes alive.

Pittsburgh 11 Brooklyn (H) 6

Similar to Chicago, Brooklyn knew they only had the faintest glimmer of hope remaining in the pennant race, but Lloyd Waner led off the game with a homerun and the Pirates scored five times in the first. The Robins fought back and got the score to within 6-4 and 7-5, but the Robins pitchers couldn't keep the Pirates off the bases, and Brooklyn is now eliminated from pennant contention.

Cincinnati 5 New York (NL) (H) 1 (GM 1)

Benny Frey (14-9) kept the Giants scoreless until two outs in the ninth and the Reds won game one of the doubleheader. Harry Heilmann chipped in with a pinch-hit homerun in the ninth for the Reds.

Cincinnati 3 New York (NL) (H) 0 (GM 2)

Si Johnson (1-8) has had a pretty rough year but shutout the Giants today to pick up his first win of the season. Bob Meusel hit a two run homerun in the fourth and that was all Cincinnati needed today.

Game Management

Given that APBA BBW 5.75 is a game it is necessary to note what settings will need to be set and what other gameplay limitations need to be acknowledged. Beyond just settings, it is a matter managerial discretion and limitation to ensure these are used but not abused. Stadiums and Rain-Outs I have installed period appropriate stadiums for all the teams and they have all been set to Domed to ensure we don’t have rain-outs. Actual 1930 rain-outs are already worked into the schedule as is. The stadium's files I have collected are in a semi-compacted format and need to be uncompressed before they can be used: Copy the <name>.DI_ and <name>.IN_ files to a temporary directory Open a DOS window (i.e, a CMD window) CD to your temp directory Use the expand command, as such: Expand <name>.DI_ <name>.DIB Expand <name>.IN_ <name>.INI Copy the newly expanded DIB and INI files to the Ballparks folder where the game is installed Assign...

Week 20 (08/25/1930 - 08/31/1930)

Monday, August 25, 1930 There are a couple of light days coming up due to travel. It will take a couple of days to sort it out, but the Midwest teams in both leagues will be facing each other, while the eastern teams in both leagues will do likewise. St. Louis (AL) 3 Detroit (H) 2 Detroit Hurler Tommy Bridges (0-1) made his first ML start today. He gave up a run in the first and in the second, but settled down after that, not allowing another run until the top of the seventh. Unfortunately for Bridges, Dick Coffman (10-16) kept the Tigers off the scoreboard until the seventh and the Browns won in a close one. Philadelphia (AL) (H) 3 Washington 0 After a single game in Washington yesterday the two teams took a train to Philadelphia for games today and tomorrow. Lefty Grove (27-2) held the Nationals to three hits and center fielder Bing Miller drove in two runs with a double and a homerun to give Grove the run support he needed. Miller has 94 RBI's on the ...

Week 23 Recap

Week 23 is completed and it is just about time to start wrapping things up here. There are a couple of travel days coming up, there are a few odds and ends games left to play, and then everyone has their final series to end the season. Cincinnati still has seven games to pay, but most teams have 3-5, so the standings are probably pretty close to final. Several teams are trying out some youngsters and several veterans are seeing their major league careers winding down. Philadelphia did clinch the AL pennant, but in the NL Brooklyn has been eliminated and Chicago is holding on by a slim thread. St. Louis swept three games in Brooklyn to start the week and they have been on a hot streak at the perfect time of the season. Brooklyn's offense has slowed without Johnny Frederick at the top, and Chicago is missing Charley Root anchoring their rotation, and neither team has played well since they lost these critical players. New York may dream of what could have been, but they are ...
