Another week of outstanding performances, mixed in with several examples of relief problems with plenty of late and extra innings heroes and goats. Two trades took place this week, and one a huge one - Heinie Manush and General Crowder going from St. Louis (AL) to Washington for Goose Goslin. There are several trades cued up for next week as well as teams make adjustments as they preprare to enter the final two-thirds of the season.
Brooklyn finally had a week where they lost more than they won, but they still maintain a healthy lead while they watch the Giants, Cubs, and Cardinals flounder behind them. Most teams are struggling through some levels of injuries to their starting nines, but no team is immune to that. The Phillies are still in last, but Lefty O'Doul and Chuck Klein suddenly sparked back to life this week and they are a dangerous combo in the middle of that Phillies lineup.
In the AL Washington is still in first place, but they can definitely feel the hot breath of the A's right behind them. The Nationals made a pair of trades to help bolster their lineup, and there is more to come. The Yankees bullpen had a bad, bad week, and blew several likely winnable games. The Red Sox have crawled their way up to .500, while the four teams at the bottom of the league all took their lickings this week.
Bill Terry (.434) still leads the NL in hitting, ahead of Lefty O'Doul (.420) and Del Bissonette (.400). Chuck Klein (.398), the other half of the Phillies' twin terrors, is right behind. There are several other players over .400 but are short on appearances. Terry and Bissonette both have 86 hits, just ahead of Johnny Frederick (84). Bissonette also leads in RBI's (60), ahead of Hack Wilson (59) and Klein (54). Wilson and Wally Berger both have 14 homeruns, just ahead of Gabby Hartnett (13). Chick Hafey and Wilson both have 19 doubles. Frederick also leads in runs (56), well ahead of Frankie Frisch (50) and teammates Bissonette and Babe Herman, both with 49. Jesse Haines (8-1, 1.50) still leads in ERA, ahead of Jumbo Elliott (2.14) and Carl Hubbell (2.24)
Lou Gehrig (.428) leads the AL in hitting, ahead of Mickey Cochrane (.409) and Al Simmons (.402) Simmons has missed much of the past two weeks, but the A's have stayed on their hot streak despite missing their big hitting left fielder. Gehrig has also taken the lead in hits with 86, well ahead of Charlie Gehringer (78) and Joe Cronin (76), and Gehrig also leads in RBI's (70), ahead of Babe Ruth (63) and Goose Goslin (47). Bill Regan and Gehringer both have 20 doubles, just ahead of Cochrane (19). Ruth (64) leads in runs scored, ahead of teammates Earle Combs (59) and Gehrig (47). Rip Collins (1.33) has just enough innings to have taken the ERA lead, ahead of Lefty Grove (1.57) and Lloyd Brown (2.24).
The replay continues to progress quite nicely (and quickly). I am not in a hurry, nor do I have a target for completion, but I have started contemplating what's next. Stay tuned.
