Week 4 Results (05/05/1930 - 05/11/1930)

Monday, May 5, 1930

Boston (AL) (H) 10 Cleveland 0

Cleveland's scoring woes continue as Milt Gaston went all the way for the complete game shutout victory. Gaston picked up two hits as well. Boston First baseman Phil Todt hit two doubles and a homerun and drove in five runs to lead the Red Sox offense.

New York (AL) (H) 6 Chicago (AL) 5

Lefty Gomez made his ML debut as a starter today and promptly gave up three runs in the top of the first to the visiting White Sox. Gomez settled down after that, and eventually, the Yankees got to Red Faber, scoring five in the bottom of the seventh to recapture the lead. The big hit was a Babe Ruth bases-loaded double - Ruth now has 30 RBI's for the season.

Philadelphia (AL) (H) 7 St. Louis (AL) 2

Lefty Grove went all the way, scattering three hits for the easy win, and hit homerun himself to help his own cause. Al Simmons hit a two-run homerun for the A's, and A's third baseman Jimmy Dykes picked up three RBI's for the day. The St. Louis offense consisted of a two-run homerun by shortstop Red Kress.

Washington (HL) 11 Detroit 5

Washington's first two batters, George Loepp and Sam Rice, were both HBP and were removed from the game. Later in the game, Detroit starter Chief Hogsett hit Joe Cronin with a pitch and Hogsett was ejected. Cronin couldn't continue either and had to be replaced by Jackie Hayes (Washington had no other rated shortstop). This was as about as close to an on-field brawl I think as APBA gets.

As far as the rest of the game, both Goose Goslin and Ossie Bluege picked up four RBI's on the day, and although he didn’t pitch appreciably well, Lloyd Brown did pick up his third win of the season.

Cincinnati (H) 6 Boston (AL) 5

Cincinnati scored four in the bottom of the first, a two-run homerun with two outs by Tony Cuccinello being the big blow. The Braves fought back to tie it up, but it wasn't enough as the Reds came back to regain the lead, and Red Lucas made this lead stand up this time to get the victory.

Pittsburgh (H) 5 New York (NL) 2

It was billed as a pitcher's duel, but Larry French definitely bested Bill Walker in this one. Walker was wild, allowing eight walks on the days, and the Pirates just hit too good to have that many additional runners on base without taking advantage of it. Paul Waner drove on three runs for the Pirates with a double and a triple.

Tuesday, May 6, 1930

Chicago (AL) 8 Boston (AL) (H) 3

The surprising White Sox held on to the second spot in AL with a decisive 8-3 win over the Boston Red Sox. Ted Lyons went all the way for the win and picked up three hits on the day. White Sox Second baseman Bill Cissell picked up five RBI's while in the lead-off spot on three hits, including a double and a triple

New York (AL) (H) 10 Cleveland 3

The Yankees have shown that they have the offensive firepower. Their question remains their pitching. Today George Pipgras stepped up for the Yankees and went all the way for the complete game victory. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig both had two RBI's for the day, giving them 32 and 26 RBI's respectively, for the season. Gehrig hit his eighth homerun of the season to pass Ruth in that department.

Note: Mel Harder came into the game in the eighth as a reliever, but had to be pulled before he faced a batter due to injury.

Philadelphia (AL) (H) 4 St. Louis (AL) 0

The A's scored single runs in four of the first five innings and Rube Walberg had all he needed today. The A's offense really hasn't woken up yet, Jimmy Foxx especially. With the win today they have climbed back over .500, so they are hoping they have moved past their early season struggles.

Washington (H) 13 Detroit 3

Several times Detroit starter Vic Sorrell thought he was out of an inning when his defense let him down, and giving Goose Goslin extra at-bats with runners on base was not a good strategy.  Goslin went 3-for-5 with a double and a homerun (#6) and five RBI's for the day.

Brooklyn 6 Chicago (NL) (H) 4

Ray Moss was unexpectedly pulled into the game in the bottom of the fourth and promptly allowed the Cubs to tie the game back up at 4-4, but Moss then went on to pitch four scoreless innings after that to pick up the win. The Cubs had plenty of opportunities but just couldn't get the key hit when they needed it.

Note: Dodger starter Dazzy Vance was unable to continue pitching in the bottom of the fourth and had to be replaced.

Cincinnati (H) 15 Boston (NL) 10

The visiting Braves scored single runs in each of the first six innings, but the sixth inning ended with them losing by a score of 15-6. George "High Pockets" Kelly went 4-for-4 for the day and drove in eight runs, including a grand slam. This game featured a total of 41 hits and thirteen walks, with 29 runners left on base.

New York (NL) 6 Pittsburgh (H) 1

An error by Pittsburgh shortstop  Dick Bartell in the top of the first opened the door for two Giants runs, and that was all Carl Hubbell needed today. Today also marked the 1930 debut for Pittsburgh third baseman Pie Traynor, who had previously been unavailable due to appendicitis.

Wednesday, May 7, 1930

Trade: In a move to buff up their pitching, the New York Yankees acquired Red Ruffing from the Boston Red Sox in return for outfielder Cedric Durst. The Red Sox have been having outfield injury issues, Ruffing was off to a poor start, so I am sure it seemed like a good deal at the time. But Durst was already 33 years old, and this would be his final season at the major league level. Ruffing was only 25 and would pitch until 1947, essentially burnishing his Hall-of-Fame credentials as a mainstay of the Yankees rotations of the 1930's.

Boston (AL) (H) 14 Chicago (AL) 1

The Red Sox scored eight times in the bottom of the first off Hal McKain and Hod Lisenbee was able to cruise home for the easy victory. Boston second baseman Bill Regan went 4-for-5 for the day and picked up his league-leading tenth double.

Note: Boston left fielder Russ Scarritt was HBP and was replaced in left by Joe Cicero.

New York (AL) (H) 9 Cleveland 6

Lou Gehrig - two run homerun in the first, Babe Ruth - two run homerun in the fifth. Pretty much the same old Yankee story so far this season. The Indians have struggled offensively this season, but today they showed a little life and made the final innings a little tighter than the Yankees might have liked.

Philadelphia (AL) (H) 1 St. Louis (AL) 0

Jimmie Foxx hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth to break up the scoreless tie and that was all George Earnshaw needed today. Lefty Stewart pitched well for the Browns, but one mistake to the wrong guy was all it took.

Detroit 8 Washington (H) 7 (12)

The game went back and forth, with the Tigers taking an early lead, only to see the Nationals regain it with a four-run sixth. The Tigers tied it and then took the lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth, but Washington sent it into extra's when the squeezed home the tying run in the bottom of the ninth. Charlie Gehringer doubled to lead off the twelfth, and then later scored on a Marty McManus sacrifice fly, and Charlie Sullivan held off the Nationals in the bottom of the twelfth to pick up the win.

Brooklyn 6 Chicago (NL) (H) 4 (12)

The Cubs managed to send the game into extra innings with a two-run ninth - Gabby Hartnett hit his second homerun of the game to make it close, and then Rogers Hornsby hit a pinch-hit double to tie it up. The Robins stayed strong, and eventually regained the lead on a Babe Herman single in the top of the twelfth. Clise Dudley pitched two scoreless innings for the Robins and picked up the win in relief.

Cincinnati (H) 14 Boston (NL) 1

It was a close game, for a while. Then the Reds started hitting and couldn’t stop. Curt Walker went  3-for-3 with a homerun and five RBI's, but every player in the Reds lineup had at least one hit and all but one scored. Benny Frey had been a hard-luck pitcher so far this year, but in his last appearance he was able to get his ERA below 10.00 and today he was able to get it down below 6.00.

New York (NL) 17 Pittsburgh (H) 2

Roy Parmelee made his first (and only) start of the season for the Giants and he certainly made the most of it, scattering seven hits and picking up the complete-game victory. Parmelee also hit a three-run homerun and a triple as well. Mel Ott has been off to a bit of a slow start, but went 4-for-6 with two homeruns (#2 and #3) and picked up five RBI's for the day.

St. Louis (NL) (H) 4 Philadelphia (NL) 3

A two-run homerun by St. Louis first baseman George Watkins in the bottom of the first put the Cardinals ahead and Jesse Haines went all the way from there to pick up the victory. Haines also drove in what turned out to be a crucial run with a double in the fourth.

Note: Watkins was HBP and was replaced by Ernie Orsatti in the sixth.

Thursday, May 8, 1930

Boston (AL) (H) 5 Chicago (AL) 2

The White Sox scored twice in the top of the first, but that was it as Jack Russell shut them down the rest of the way.  Cedric Durst, in his first start in a Red Sox uniform, went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Philadelphia (AL) (H) 8 St. Louis (AL) 0

Bill Shores only allowed one hit, a fourth-inning double to Browns third baseman Sammy Hale, and cruised to an easy shutout victory. Third baseman Jimmy Dykes went 3-for-5 with three RBI's, three runs scored, and a homerun to lead the A's offense. The A's had a runner thrown out at third and at home, had a runner picked off second, and hit into a double play, all of which kept the game as close as it was.

Washington (H) 9 Detroit 2

The Nationals just continue to grind on their opponents. They keep putting men on base until finally, someone gets the big hit and the dam bursts wide open. Detroit starter Ownie Carroll could never get the third out in the bottom of the sixth and then center fielder Sam West finally put the game out of reach with a grand slam homerun. Sad Sam Jones went all the way for the easy victory.

Brooklyn 6 Chicago (NL) (H) 2

Robins starter Ray Phelps scattered four hits as the Robins picked up a good win over the Cubs. Johnny Frederick and Glenn Wright both hit homeruns for the Robins.

Cincinnati (H) 7 Boston (NL) 1

The Reds scored all of their runs in the first two innings and Eppa Rixey had what he needed as Rixey went all the way to pick up the victory. Curt Walker went 3-for-5 with two runs, three RBI's, and hit his fourth homerun of the season.

New York (NL) 8 Pittsburgh (H) 6

It certainly wasn't the prettiest win of Freddie Fitzsimmons career, but he'll take it. Bill Terry, now hitting .485 for the season, went 4-for-5 on the day, and didn't hit for the cycle when that last hit unexpectedly flew over the wall for his second homerun of the day.

Philadelphia (NL) 5 St. Louis (H) 4

In a back-and-forth game, it was the Phillies who scored last - two runs in the top of the ninth - to pick up the win. Both teams had twelve hits on the days, Bill Hallahan walked eight Phillies and Les Sweetland walked five Cardinals, but several base runners were thrown out on the bases today and there were several double plays, all which kept the game from blowing open for one team or the other.

Note: Frankie Frisch was injured in an on-field play in the third inning and had to be replaced.

Friday, May 9, 1930

St. Louis (AL) 6 Boston (AL) (H) 5 (10)

Browns shortstop Red Kress homered in the eighth to tie the game and then doubled home the eventual winning run in the top of the tenth. Rip Collins got the win in relief.

New York (AL) (H) 11 Detroit 2

Yankee started Ed Wells gave up two runs in the top of the first but settled down after that and the Yankees offense pounded their way to another victory. Wells also went 2-for-3 for the day with three runs scored. Babe Ruth regained the homerun lead (10) by hitting two homeruns, and his four RBI's now gave him 38 for the season.

Philadelphia (AL) (H) 5 Cleveland 4

A single by A's shortstop Joe Boley and an error by Cleveland third baseman Johnny Burnett allowed the potential winning run to get into scoring position and A's third baseman Jimmy Dykes obliged by hitting a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth. Lefty Grove struggled early against the Indians, but was able to move his record to 6-0 for the season. Jimmie Foxx scored three times, having scored twice on sacrifice fly's by part-time catcher Cy Perkins.

Washington (H) 4 Chicago (AL) 0

Washington starter Lloyd Brown was the story today, as he scattered five hits and picked up the complete game shutout victory. Brown also drove in a key run with a single in the decisive three-run third inning for the Nationals.

New York (NL) 5 Chicago (NL) (H) 3

Freddy Leach led the game off with a triple and the Giants took an early lead, but the Cubs came back to take a 3-1 lead after three. The Giants pushed across two in the fourth to tie it up, and then two more in the seventh to regain the lead. Hub Pruett shut down the Cubs after a shaky start and got the victory.

Philadelphia (NL) 9 Cincinnati (H) 8

The Phillies moved out to an early 6-3 lead and appeared to be cruising to an easy victory. The Reds stormed back late, and the bases loaded with one out and the tying run on third, but Hap Collard managed to extract himself from the mess he put himself in and the Phillies got the victory. First baseman Don Hurst drove in five for the Phillies and hit his second homerun of the season.

Brooklyn 6 Pittsburgh (H) 1

The Robins continued their run of good play, scoring three in the top of first against the Pirates. Glenn Wright, the likely Brooklyn MVP to this point, hit a two-run homerun, and starter Watty Clark had all he needed.

St. Louis (NL) (H) 9 Boston (NL) 4

It was tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but then Cardinals offense does what they do when they exploded for five quick runs. A couple of seemingly harmless singles got things started, and then three consecutive doubles (Chick Hafey, Ernie Orsatti, and Jimmie Wilson) to put the game away. Syl Johnson was pretty shaky early, but settled down and got the win for the Cardinals.

Saturday, May 10, 1930

St. Louis (AL) 3 Boston (AL) (H) 2

Sam Gray pitched his best game of the year for the Browns, but the Red Sox got on the board first and Milt Gaston would not let the Browns get the lead back today. Catcher Charlie Berry, hitting in the eight spot, drove in two of Boston's three runs.

New York (AL) (H) 8 Detroit 3

Lefty Gomez held the Tigers to five hits, although two of these hits were homeruns by Detroit center fielder Liz Funk. Yankee centerfielder Earle Combs hit a three-run homerun and scored three times out of the lead-off spot.

Philadelphia (AL) (H) 7 Cleveland 5

This game went back and forth, with the Indians taking an early lead, the A's catching up and then regaining the lead, then the Indians, and then A's again. A's starter Rube Walberg put the A's ahead to stay with his second triple of the game in the bottom of the sixth, but the Indians weren't done as George Earnshaw had to come in and get the A's out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth.

Washington (H) 10 Chicago (AL) 5

The Nationals took an early 8-1 lead after three and starter Ad Liska kept the White Sox from mounting a big inning (the White Sox had fourteen hits and three walks on the day) to pick up the win. Homeruns haven't been the key to Washington's success so far, but today Sam West, Buddy Myer, and Joe Judge all went deep.

Chicago (NL) (H) 9 New York (NL) 5

The Giants had won four in a row and had climbed up to the #3 spot in the NL, but two first-inning errors opened the door for the Cubs and a Gabby Hartnett three-run homerun gave them a lead and they never looked back. Hartnett added a second homerun in the bottom of the seventh, giving him seven long flies for the season.

Cincinnati (H) 8 Philadelphia (NL) 1

Hod Ford was moved to the second spot in the lineup for the Reds and responded with a 3-for-5 day with two triples Jersey Joe Stripp chipped in with a 4-for-5 day, and both he and Curt Walker each drove in three runs for the day.

Note: I accidentally left the auto-play on for this game.

Brooklyn 13 Pittsburgh (H) 2

The first six Robins all reached base and eventually scored, and Jumbo Elliott and Brooklyn strolled to an easy victory over the Pirates. Ray Kremer saw his record drop to 1-5 and the Pirates ace just hasn't been able to get it going so far this season.

Note: Brooklyn second baseman Jake Flowers was ejected in the eighth for arguing balls and strikes. Due to a roster depleted by injuries, outfielder Harvey Hendrick was a second baseman for an inning in the ninth.

St. Louis (NL) (H) 6 Boston (NL) 1

Cardinal starter Al Grabowski gave up four hits and six walks but kept the Braves off the scoreboard until there was one out in the ninth inning. Second baseman Frankie Frisch went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBI's, including a double and a homerun.

Sunday, May 11, 1930

St. Louis (AL) 4 Boston (AL) (H) 3

With the score tied 3-3 in the top of the ninth, the Browns finally pushed across the lead run but had two other runners thrown out at home trying to further the lead. Lefty Stewart extended his win-loss record to 5-1 for the Browns.

Philadelphia (AL) (H) 3 Cleveland 2

Wes Ferrell continued his dearth of run support from his Indians teammates as the two runs Cleveland scored this time didn't come until the bottom of the ninth (a two-run homerun by Johnny Hodapp), but it was too little, too late as the A's continued their hot streak with a 3-2 victory. Little-used backup catcher Wally Schang surprised everyone with a two-run homerun in the sixth, and Eddie Rommel made that stand up for the win.

Note: Cleveland first baseman Lew Fonseca and catcher Luke Sewell tripped over each other chasing a pop foul in the top of the fifth and had to be replaced.

Detroit 7 New York (AL) (H) 6

The Yankees committed three errors and allowed the Tigers to build up an early 7-0 lead, four of the runs being unearned. Red Ruffing made his first start since becoming a Yankee and pitched well otherwise, but the damage was done. Vic Sorrell went all the way for the Tigers, and, managed to escape with the victory as the Yankees put on a late-game surge to make it close.

Washington (H) 3 Chicago (AL) 2

Chicago first baseman Art Shires hit a two run homerun in the top of the first to give Ted Lyons and White Sox an early lead, but then the White Sox committed four errors and allowed three runs (two unearned) to hand the lead right back. Both Lyons and Washington starter Bump Hadley pitched masterfully from there, but the Nationals managed to grind out another win to remain in first place in the AL.

Brooklyn (H) 4 Pittsburgh 0

Babe Herman drove in two with a double and a homerun and Dazzy Vance shut down the Pirates offense and pick up the complete-game victory.

Note: After having played the previous three days in Pittsburgh I was surprised to see the Robins at home again. It turns out that today is Sunday, Pennsylvania still has Blue Laws, so no Sunday baseball (at least for a couple of more years). Both teams must have jumped on a train and high-tailed it back to Brooklyn for today's game.

Chicago (NL) (H) 3 New York (NL) 2 (12)

Starting pitchers Charlie Root and Carl Hubbell each gave up a run in the first, and that was it until both teams scored a single run in the eleventh inning. Then in the bottom of the twelfth Woody English stroked a two-out single that scored Clyde Beck from second for the win.

Cincinnati (H) 6 Philadelphia (NL) 5 (10)

The Cincinnati fans were already packing up their belongings and had started heading for the aisles when all of a sudden the Reds scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Bob Meusel had hit a two-run homerun previously, and when he got his chance in the tenth he scored Curt Walker with a game-winning single.

St. Louis (NL) (H) 2 Boston (NL) 1 (GM 1)

Cardinal starter Jesse Haines allowed an unearned run in the second and for a while, it looked like that was all Boston starter Socks Seibold was going to need. Unfortunately for the Braves, Seibold grooved one to light-hitting Cardinal shortstop Charlie Gelbert who hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth and that was to be all of the scoring in this one.

Boston (NL) 8 St. Louis (NL) (H) 5 (GM 2)

The Braves had lost eight in a row coming into this one but starter Bob Smith was able to hold off the Cardinals firepower long enough to claim the victory.  Wild Bill Hallahan hasn't pitched well for the Cardinals this season but has usually had the run support to get away with it, but not today. Braves shortstop Rabbit Maranville when 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple to spark the Boston offense.

Game Management

Given that APBA BBW 5.75 is a game it is necessary to note what settings will need to be set and what other gameplay limitations need to be acknowledged. Beyond just settings, it is a matter managerial discretion and limitation to ensure these are used but not abused. Stadiums and Rain-Outs I have installed period appropriate stadiums for all the teams and they have all been set to Domed to ensure we don’t have rain-outs. Actual 1930 rain-outs are already worked into the schedule as is. The stadium's files I have collected are in a semi-compacted format and need to be uncompressed before they can be used: Copy the <name>.DI_ and <name>.IN_ files to a temporary directory Open a DOS window (i.e, a CMD window) CD to your temp directory Use the expand command, as such: Expand <name>.DI_ <name>.DIB Expand <name>.IN_ <name>.INI Copy the newly expanded DIB and INI files to the Ballparks folder where the game is installed Assign...

Week 20 (08/25/1930 - 08/31/1930)

Monday, August 25, 1930 There are a couple of light days coming up due to travel. It will take a couple of days to sort it out, but the Midwest teams in both leagues will be facing each other, while the eastern teams in both leagues will do likewise. St. Louis (AL) 3 Detroit (H) 2 Detroit Hurler Tommy Bridges (0-1) made his first ML start today. He gave up a run in the first and in the second, but settled down after that, not allowing another run until the top of the seventh. Unfortunately for Bridges, Dick Coffman (10-16) kept the Tigers off the scoreboard until the seventh and the Browns won in a close one. Philadelphia (AL) (H) 3 Washington 0 After a single game in Washington yesterday the two teams took a train to Philadelphia for games today and tomorrow. Lefty Grove (27-2) held the Nationals to three hits and center fielder Bing Miller drove in two runs with a double and a homerun to give Grove the run support he needed. Miller has 94 RBI's on the ...

Week 23 Recap

Week 23 is completed and it is just about time to start wrapping things up here. There are a couple of travel days coming up, there are a few odds and ends games left to play, and then everyone has their final series to end the season. Cincinnati still has seven games to pay, but most teams have 3-5, so the standings are probably pretty close to final. Several teams are trying out some youngsters and several veterans are seeing their major league careers winding down. Philadelphia did clinch the AL pennant, but in the NL Brooklyn has been eliminated and Chicago is holding on by a slim thread. St. Louis swept three games in Brooklyn to start the week and they have been on a hot streak at the perfect time of the season. Brooklyn's offense has slowed without Johnny Frederick at the top, and Chicago is missing Charley Root anchoring their rotation, and neither team has played well since they lost these critical players. New York may dream of what could have been, but they are ...
