Week 8 Recap

Calendar-wise, week eight being completed means we are 33% of the way through the replay. Games played wise, we are only at the 30% mark, so the games still have some catch-up to do with the calendar. All the teams have now played more than 40 games, and although some are close, no one has reached the 50 mark just yet.  The teams are starting to experience the everyday bumps and bruises that keeps regulars out of the lineup for days or weeks at a time. Rosters are thin to begin with, so a couple of injuries here and there do add up, but the games must go on. Brooklyn's ERA finally crept over 3.00 this past week (2.94 -> 3.17), but they have maintained their winning ways and have an eleven game lead still. They do have a lot of games coming up with the three teams directly behind them, but in the meantime St. Louis, Chicago, and New York have all proven successful at keeping either of the other two teams from building up any winning momentum. The teams in the bottom h...

Week 8 Results (06/02/1930 - 06/08/1930)

Monday, June 2, 1930 It's travel day, so a light schedule. The NL western teams are heading east, while the east coast teams in the AL head west. There is a full slate of games tomorrow. Philadelphia (NL) (H) 8 St. Louis (NL) 6 Phillies start Phil Collins (1-1) gave up four runs in the top of the first but settled down after that as his teammates began to chip away at the Cardinals lead. The hitting heroes for the Phillies came in the bottom two spots in the batting order. Catcher Spud Davis went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, four RBI's, and a homerun, and Collins helped his own cause by going 3-for-4 with three RBI's and two doubles. Tuesday, June 3, 1930 New York (AL) 8 Chicago (AL) (H) 3 The Yankees moved into Chicago to start a series with the White Sox and their offense started immediately with a single run in the first. Lou Gehrig then hit a two-run homerun in the third and followed that with a two-run double in the fifth, and George...

Week 7 Recap

This past week was something. Every team played a doubleheader on Friday (Memorial Day), we had a player pass away unexpectedly ( Hal Carlson ), we saw two future Hall-of-Famers make their final ML appearance ( Pete Alexander and Dave Bancroft ), and another future Hall-of-Famer ( Rogers Hornsby ) broke his ankle and is going to miss three months. This upcoming week is a transition week as the NL western teams move east, while the AL east coast teams travel to visit their brethren in the great Midwest. We've reached the end of May 1930, and most teams have passed the 40 games played mark or are close to it, so we have moved past that "it's still early" way of looking at things. There are a lot of games left to play, things are moving along rather quickly, and I am looking forward to where this might take me. Pinky and Bubbles Hargrave In the American League, Washington (Replay: 30-12, Actual: 27-15) is +3 games to their record, while the A's (R: 25-1...

Week 7 Results (05/26/1930 - 06/01/1930)

Monday, May 26, 1930 Cleveland (H) 5 Chicago (AL) 4 (GM 1) Cleveland took an early 3-0 lead, but the White Sox fought back to tie the score at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Both teams scored once more, but it looked like extra innings were on the docket until Ed Morgan won the game with a one-out homerun (#8) in the bottom of the ninth. Wes Ferrell (4-5) was happy to get the run support and pick up the win. Chicago (AL) 13 Cleveland (H) 3 (GM 2) With a doubleheader today and another tomorrow the Indians stayed with starter Clint Brown (1-5) a little too long and the White Sox took advantage, scoring seven times in the seventh inning. Smead Jolley hit a three-run homerun to put the game out of reach. Pat Caraway (3-0) weakened late and allowed three runs in the last two innings, but got the complete game victory. Washington 14 New York (AL) (H) 5 Washington has played 24 of their first 30 games at home, so they know this will have to bal...
